How many hours are required?
Each student attending the center for wellness and medical professions must complete 200 volunteer community service hours.
Do the volunteer hours have to be in medical work?
At least 100 hours must be related to medical work. You may choose the remaining 100 hours from any other field.
Must I do 50 hours per year?
You may choose to do the community service work at any time during your four years at PHUHS. If you average 50 hours per year, you will complete the requirements in four years. Some of our current freshman already have in excess of 100 hours. Select a schedule that is workable for you. Avoid trying to complete all your hours during your senior year.
When may I start working on my volunteer hours?
You may start any day after you finish grade 8. Volunteer hours that are being used as service learning hours towards Florida Academic Scholars Award (Bright Futures Scholarship) only can be counted after the beginning of grade 9.
How do I document my hours?
All hours must be documented. The magnet office does have a form that can be used. The student is responsible for completing all parts of the form except the supervisor's signature. Show the form to the person supervising your work the first day you volunteer. Mutually decide when and how often the supervisor will sign off on your hours. The signature of your supervisor must be writen with both a first and last name. Please inform your supervisor that we may call her or him for verification.
May I document more than 200 hours?
Yes, all hours will become a part of your portfolio. If 75 hours of the 200 are to be counted as service learning hours, the student must obtain additional forms from her or his guidance counselor.
May my supervisor be a family member?
Yes, with prior administrative approval.
Will the Center for Wellness and Medical Professions program assist me with volunteer opportunities?
Yes. Please contact the program coordinator for suggestions.
Where do I turn in my completed forms?
Turn in all completed forms to the magnet office. Make a copy of your completed form for your records before giving the original to the office.
